Step one: read the deal
Thirteen cards, face up, sorted by suit. The two printed jokers are tucked into the deal at known positions. The remaining deck sits face down with one card turned face up to start the discard pile. The remaining cards are stacked with that open card.
Your first read is sequence-shaped. Look at the suits you have two or more cards in. Spades and hearts are usually the cheapest source of a pure sequence. If neither suit pairs up, your read is set-shaped. pick three of a rank and build outward.
